Gertrude Bustill Mossell was an Afrikan author, journalist and teacher

After an early career contributing articles to Philadelphia newspapers, she became women's editor of the New York Age from 1885 to 1889, and of the Indianapolis World from 1891 to 1892.

She strongly supported the development of Black newspapers, and encouraged more women to enter journalism.

Born on July 3, 1855 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Charles and Emily Bustill and came from a prominent family. Her great-grandfather, Cyrus Bustill, served in George Washington's troops as a baker and after the War of Independence, he started a successful bakery in Philadelphia.

The elder Bustill also co-founded the first black mutual-aid society in America, the Free African Society. Among the many other Bustills of distinction are Gertrude's great-aunt, abolitionist and educator Grace Bustill Douglass and her daughter Sarah Mapps Douglass, who followed in her mother's footsteps.

Gertrude's most famous descendant was her nephew Paul Bustill Robeson.

Moses Fleetwood Walker, often called Fleet, was the first African American to play major league baseball in the nineteenth century. Born October 7, 1857, in Mount Pleasant, Ohio, Walker was the fifth of six children born to parents, Dr. Moses W. Walker, a physician, and Caroline Walker, a midwife. Oberlin College admitted Walker for the fall 1878 semester. In 1881, he played in all five games of the new varsity baseball team at Oberlin. R.L. BURNSIDE (1926-2005) was a charismatic singer and guitarist, in the deepest Mississippi Hill Country tradition. He learned and was greatly influenced by Fred McDowell, and also played in the style of John Lee Hooker. A lot happened in his 78 years. He was first recorded in 1967 by George Mitchell, and went on to make several records for various European labels. Later in his life, in the 1990s, he was crossover hit with his recordings on the Fat Possum label, with his own band and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. A farmer, fisherman, and family man, he had many children, several of which played music. I met him in the early 1990s, he was very kind, and funny, known for his toasts and jokes as well as his hypnotic, trance-inducing style.
